El Zarzal 2020, Freshness And All The Expressivity Of The Godello

New vintage of one of our white wines, El Zarzal 2020 arrives on a high note

  • Bodegas Emilio Moro presents the fifth vintage of El Zarzal, the 100% Godello white wine produced in El Bierzo, which captivates from the very first moment.
  • El Zarzal is the white wine that presents all the particularities of the Godello variety in its maximum expression.

Zarzal 2020, is the fifth vintage of one of the three whites produced by Bodegas Emilio Moro in El Bierzo. A wine that was born as part of an innovative project with a variety, the Godello, which is here to stay. As the president of Bodegas Emilio Moro, Javier Moro, comments, ‘we strive for excellence in all our wines, and the Godello variety is perfect for achieving this in our whites’.

El Zarzal 2020 is a Godello fermented in French oak foudre with a faint straw-yellow colour, clean and bright in the glass. In terms of aromas, there are traces of ripe white fruit and stone fruit, which harmonise in the bouquet with the mineral and honeyed aromas. When you taste it, it captivates you with its freshness and balanced acidity. When it reaches the mid-palate it is voluminous, with an easy finish that encourages further sipping. It’s a wine with a clear varietal character, respecting the identity of the variety without renouncing its freshness, making it ideal for this time of the year.

This vintage was characterised by rainy weather in the spring of 2020, followed by a summer of mild temperatures with cool periods that coincided with the flowering season. The day-night temperature oscillation allowed the grapes to ripen quickly. This resulted in a grape of perfect quality to produce a must with ideal characteristics. Once the grapes were harvested, they were fermented at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged over lees in French oak foudres.

Together with La Revelía and Polvorete, El Zarzal is the result of the dedicated effort of Bodegas Emilio Moro to its project in El Bierzo, which continues to grow. The credentials of this white wine speak for themselves. In 2018, the third vintage of this wine, it was chosen as one of the 100 best wines in the world in the prestigious list of the American magazine Wine Spectator, one of the most important international wine publications. It also received ratings in the main guides and specialised publications in North America, with 91 points in Wine Advocate, magazine by the renowned wine guru Robert Parker, 90 points by the critic Jeb Dunnuck and 93 points by James Suckling.
