Malleolus

History

Malleolus first saw the light of day in 1998 and with it came a new era for Bodegas Emilio Moro, breaking away from the classic categories of Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva, which depend on the time the wine spends in barrels, and starting to value it according to its vintage, offering each wine what it needs.

Type of soil

Stony moorland soils

It comes from the high areas of the Ribera del Duero, characterised by soils of limited depth, with high concentrations of calcium carbonate and numerous stony areas both on the surface and in deep layers.

These soils give low yields but an excellent balance between the ripeness and freshness of the grapes, while producing fruit with enormous winemaking potential.

Process

The art of winemaking

Malleolus spends approximately 18 days macerating with its skins and undergoes malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks before ageing in French oak barrels.

Most of the barrels used are 500-litre barrels, which provide a very even balance of tannin and oxygen to the wine.

Tasting notes

Enjoy your senses

A very deep cherry red in colour, ripe black fruit and the resinous notes of cedar and tobacco come to the fore in the bouquet, expressing their intensity and complexity with time and developing spiced notes like cloves, without loss of character of its fruity expression. On the palate it is powerful, structured and intense, with great balance and a gentle but intense mouthfeel.

This was the 2021 vintage

Video tasting

The weather for the 2021 vintage was marked by light temperatures during the spring, accumulated rainfall in April and a summer with slightly lower temperatures than usual, which slowed down the plant’s growth cycle. At the beginning of autumn, rainfall was scarce, favouring the ripening of the grapes.
