Balance

El Zarzal

Zarzal is a white wine with a clear varietal character that respects the identity of the Godello grape without renouncing freshness. It is a wine that attracts the most discerning connoisseurs from the first sip due to its great balance between the grape’s own acidity and freshness.

El Zarzal

History

2016 was an important year for Bodegas Emilio Moro because with the exit of El Zarzal, together with La Revelía, a new exciting project began in El Bierzo. We had a dream, to make white wines, and when we tasted the Godello variety in 2013 we fell in love so much that we decided to embark on a new path in our history.

Only three years later, El Zarzal was launched on the market to prove that we knew what we were doing and to present the virtues of a variety that, at that time, was not as well known as it is today. With El Zarzal we laid the foundations of a dream that has come true today with our own winery in what is now our second home, El Bierzo.

The El Zarzal label pays tribute to the very special microclimate of El Bierzo, with the natural barrier of the Sierra de los Ancares mountain range calming the Atlantic storms, generating a continental Mediterranean climate with an Atlantic influence, very suitable for the area’s crops.

Area of origin

Lower and upper slopes

The grapes used to make El Zarzal come from the lower and upper parts of the northwest-facing slopes, which allows us to achieve a grape with fruit intensity while also developing complexity and personality in the medium term.

Process

The art of winemaking

Zarzal is fermented at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks, then aged over its lees in French oak foudres, which allows the wine to round out and prolong its optimal moment of consumption.

Tasting notes

Empower your senses

A very pale straw coloured wine. The bouquet combines the character of the 2022 vintage with the personality of the variety, offering an eminently fruity wine with extra intensity and richness. In the glass it evolves towards elegant notes of citrus zest and minerality. Well-balanced on the palate, this is a smooth, medium volume wine. Easy and fresh finish.

Video tasting

The year 2022 will be remembered for being dry and warm. The spring was characterised by scarce rainfall, which gradually disappeared in the summer months. Late rains arrived in August, which ensured the ripening of the grapes. In general it was a warm year, but the microclimate of El Bierzo and the hillsides mitigated the effects of the heat waves and marked the character and final quality of the harvest.
